  • Remind me why I'm giving you my money?

Today was my first day back in college after a long...hiatus.

And this is a rant.  It is skippable, definitely.  But you've been kind enough to drop by, so here's Rigby and Tonka being fat puppies:

    Dogs 008

    And guarding the fort.

    Anyway, rant.

    1.  For the crazy amount of dough this is costing me, I should be able to get a straight, to the point answer to my questions regarding the program I am in.  I should not be referred to ten different people or to the fucking internet.  It's a private college!  It's tiny!  It's not like going to the U-Dub and being a little fish in a massive sea.

    2.  WTF happened to free printing?  WTF?  I'm supposed to go buy a print card?  My classes take place after the book store has closed.  I'm supposed to come in from Seattle five hours early to buy a print card?  The student body is tiny and consists of tree-huggin' hippies, there's really not that much printing going on!

    3.  These teachers are brilliant.  Who the fuck hired this sad administration?

    4.  Stop.  Changing.  The .  Programs.  Every three months something has been revamped, rescheduled, remodeled, restructured, revised, reconsidered.  Programs don't even have time to run their course before they're abolished in favor of some other newfangled bullshit that no one really cares about.  The BA teacher prep program abolished the same quarter that the "Sustainable Business" program emerges?  Who made that call?  Was it the 40 year old hipster that took over the BA department?

    5.  This was once a well-respected, historically significant university.  Stop fucking with its credibility!

    6.  Those low-flow toilets take two flushes to get rid of plain old toilet paper.  Purpose.  Defeated.

    /end rant.

    Thank you.

  • thekeyhole

    I could not agree more.

'Love the pic of Tonka and Rugby; they are adorable. :)

  • amygwen

It's the Gen-Xer, or whatever you call them, trying to re-establish the communities of their youth.

    Dogs rule!

  • UnpredictableIdentity

Well, I hope I'll love College.

  • jupiter312

I have a lot of the same complaints about my college (except for the toilets--ours all waste water and flush properly!), and it's a huge school.  Apparently size doesn't matter in how students are treated and all the rule/program changes.

  • dearlucyford

The toilets at the college I'm at flush so powerfully, that I have to flush and run, or my ears will hurt from the noise it makes...

I look a little stupid doing that.

    Hey man, how are you?

I learnt some time ago that such places are about making money. On top of that unfortunately I also learnt that there run by humans where the courses are dependent on what resources they have. Mainly the lectures. If a lecture quits or moves on they can't just replace them, and at times they'll combine courses and do things that are really stupid.

    Money and Humans..

Make sure your always getting the best out of it though. Mainly make sure your learning what you need.

  • AlterEgo909

Thats college, pretty much all of them, unfortunately.

  • SimplyNita

Ugh...Colleges can be so irritating sometimes

But on a happy note, you're puppies are cute :)
  • burnsbringfreckles_hopefully

Eugh....I HATE the print cards, AND the outrageous cost of textbooks. Your puppies are adorable, though.

    What classes are you taking?

  • inthenameofwater

Yeah. That's the present state of American colleges. Our list is just as long here at TCNJ, where I just graduated and now they want to charge me $250 for an alumni pool card that is useless in the hottest month of the year when they are doing "routine maintenance". Yep, no pool in August. Welcome to college.

  • The1Stacy

Ah, administrative bullshit.  I know it well.
"We need your transcript from your community college before you can register for classes next quarter."
"Didn't I send that to you before I came here?"
"Yes, but we need it again.  It doesn't show that you've completed your AA."
"Oh. Okay.  The only way to get a transcript sent here is to apply for it in person."
    "That's fairly standard."
"I register in two days, there's no way I can get down to Auburn and back while still attending class.  I have my diploma with me, will that work?"
"No, we need it on your transcript."
    "..."

I love the picture of Tonka & Rigby :) Hope school goes well for you ! :)

In this capitalist culture of ours, education is a commodity, sold like shampoo.  You know how they keep changing shampoo formulations all the time?  Same with education.  It's overpriced, generally 10-15 years behind the times, and of little value except that you're not "marketable" without it.  You too are a commodity.  Enjoy the ride.

  • throwmeapiece

Wow sounds like my small, private college lol, though I have yet to experience difficulty with the toilets :P However, they seem incredibly fond of spending our money on repainting the walls-- seriously, those walls get painted once a quarter because something about the paint/wall material keeps making it chip. Waow.

  • rosehips_for_autumn_strain

wow, this sounds strangely like it could be about my school. Do you go to TESC?

  • jaded_maudlin

1,2,3 - You have my sympathy. I have gone through, and still am,the worse kinds of inefficiency and poor planning. It is so sad, especially because it is so easy to fix!

  • None_May_Have_Her

This is how ALL educational institutions are, no matter how small.  :(  Sadly.

  • dryvona

    Awesome puppies.

Can't comment much on the rant. Lack of much experience with college.

Couldn't agree more about the pointless low flow toilets.

  • sailorsakura9

    A-FUCKIN'-MEN!

#3 has the most truth of all.

  • vossy87

    I can relate..

I went to UW- Milwaukee for two years and that's all I ever got. Of course, there are about 30 thousand students there and it's more of a research college than anything.

Then I transferred to a smaller private college and I have to say that the administration and teaching has been stellar. I'm surprised you're running into those problems at a smaller private college.

  • Saphira07

    a) Cute picture.
    b) We have the printing problem at our school too. Luckily, a branch of the public library is attached to our school, so our ID cards double as library and printing cards...at least we're saved like a dollar for having to purchase those cards to load with money, but it still sucks having to pay for printing. Understandable for our school...a cheap community college. I'm not sure I can quite justify it for yours, though, with how much the tuition must be...
